Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max Still Worth It in 2026? An Extreme Power User’s Verdict
Published: May 2026 | Tech Reviews & Insights
Alright, let’s tackle the big question on everyone's mind today: Is the iPhone 17 Pro Max still one of the best phones you can buy right now in 2026?
Should you still drop your hard-earned cash on this device, or has the competition left it in the dust? For me, the option is crystal clear: Absolutely yes. This aluminum beast is one of the most remarkable smartphones on the market right now. It represents Apple at its absolute best, and I can confidently recommend it to darn near everybody—unless you simply can’t stand massive phones.
"This phone is large, it’s heavy, and it packs a massive battery that will weigh your pants down. But if you love a phone that gives you that extra hand feel, you are looking at a pure utilitarian monster."
The Aluminum Design: A Thermal Masterpiece
I am incredibly glad Apple jumped back to an aluminum design for this generation. Making the switch has given this phone the exact performance boost I wanted. Why? Because the thermals are absolutely legendary.
This phone simply does not heat up. As an extreme power user, I can probably count on one hand how many times I've actually felt this device get warm. If you've owned older iPhones, you know the pain: you step outdoors on a sunny day, try to use your phone, and the screen instantly dims to 50% because the processor is overheating. You no longer have that problem here. The thermal management alone makes this worth the upgrade.
A 3,000-Nit Display (With a Real-World Catch)
Moving over to the display, it just looks better and better every time I use it. Apple gave us ultra-thin, perfectly symmetrical bezels all the way around. At this stage, the Dynamic Island has become a true brand staple—an iPhone would almost look weird without it. It integrates beautifully with iOS features and fits the vibe of the phone perfectly.
We also get an anti-reflective coating. While it might not be the heaviest coating on the market, it handles glare duties incredibly well. Plus, with a peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits, visibility outdoors is unparalleled—especially now that thermal throttling won't dim your panel.
Durability Check: Glass is Still Glass
However, let’s keep it real for a second. If you don't use a screen protector, watch out. I managed to get a massive, deep scratch right on my display, and I honestly have no clue how it happened. The rest of the screen is completely free of micro-scratches, but that one ugly gash is a harsh reminder: no matter what marketing terms are used, glass is glass, and it’s still susceptible to the laws of physics.
The Camera System: 48 Megapixels of Versatility
Apple finally gave us 48-megapixel sensors across every single lens, and the results are insane. The star of the show is the new 4X telephoto lens, giving mobile photographers unprecedented flexibility. When shooting in RAW, the image quality genuinely rivals standalone professional cameras.
Look at the focal ranges you have at your disposal:
- Ultra-Wide: 13mm
- Standard/Main: 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, and 48mm crops
- Telephoto (4X): 100mm
- Digital/Crop Zoom (8X): 200mm
I still don't think there is a smartphone camera on the market today that is as versatile or shoots still photos as cleanly as this one.
Unmatched Mobile Video
And don’t even get me started on the video capabilities. You can shoot in 4K at 120Hz, utilize Log video for professional color grading, shoot in HDR or non-HDR, and access all of Apple's ProRes features. I literally run my entire content channel using smartphones, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max consistently looks the best.
Even the front-facing camera is next-level. You can shoot standard, zoom out for group shots, or flip it sideways for landscape video seamlessly—something few other options on the market can match.
The Ultimate Multimedia & Gaming Experience
If you're a heavy multimedia consumer or a mobile gamer, you cannot beat this phone. The combination of the hyper-bright screen, excellent thermal efficiency, and speakers that sound remarkably deep and full makes it a powerhouse. Even if you're put off by the notch/island size, it quickly fades into the background when you're immersed in a movie or a high-framerate gaming session.
Software, iOS 26, and Performance Quirks
Let's talk about performance and the software experience. The Liquid Glass UI and iOS 26 look absolutely beautiful. Generally speaking, the phone feels incredibly smooth. App opening, closing, scrolling through heavy social media feeds, processing high-res batches of photos, and AirDropping large files happen instantly.
However, there is room for improvement. I still feel like Apple occasionally limits system animations to around 90Hz instead of a locked 120Hz. When you compare it side-by-side to Android beasts like the OnePlus 15 or the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, those devices can actually feel a bit faster and more responsive in daily navigation. Furthermore, while the built-in software suite is great, Apple is still playing catch-up in the AI department compared to the latest Google Pixel and Samsung offerings.
Battery Life: Second to None
Where this phone completely dominates the competition is battery life. This is an eSIM-only device, packed with a massive 5,080 mAh battery.
In real-world use, I am regularly sitting on a day and a half of heavy use, looking down to see I still have 30% battery life remaining. In the US market, unless you are looking at specialized devices like the OnePlus 15 (which you can't easily buy in carrier stores), the iPhone's battery optimization is unmatched. It easily outperforms both the Pixel and the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
The Ecosystem and Resale Value
Yes, this phone is stupid expensive. But it comes with perks that soften the blow:
- MagSafe Integration: I love MagSafe. Unlike my Galaxy S26 Ultra, the iPhone lets me use an endless array of chargers, wallets, and ecosystem attachments.
- Accessories: The iPhone remains the undisputed king of accessories. From high-end camera rigs to cases, the market is unmatched.
- The Apple Ecosystem: The continuity between the iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV typically works flawlessly.
- Resale Value: If you decide to trade it in or sell it on the secondary market in a year or two, it retains a massive chunk of its original value.
